UX/UI design for a first of its kind football player performance trading platform

Buabook was a first-of-its-kind online platform that allowed soccer fans to bet against each other based on player performance statistics during games. This peer-to-peer model was not only innovative but required a fresh approach to UI/UX design to make it intuitive and engaging.

The Challenge

The challenge was to design a user-friendly platform that simplified the complex process of trading on player performance for both experienced bettors and newcomers, while encouraging interaction.

The challenge was to design a user-friendly platform that simplified the complex process of trading on player performance for both experienced bettors and newcomers, while encouraging interaction.

Early wireframes for trade page on Version 1.0. This was before we took a strategic decision to licence player images.

Research

Through extensive research, including user feedback, interviews, and data analysis, I gained a deep understanding of the diverse needs of both expert traders and beginners. Using these insights, I refined the design strategy to create a platform that offered in-depth analytics for experienced users and a simpler, educational interface for newcomers.

With an iterative process of wireframing and prototyping, I mapped the user journeys and continuously adjusted the design based on early feedback. This led to the development of a comprehensive dashboard where users could easily track player prices, monitor performance, and trade throughout the soccer season.

Achievements and Reflections

The UI/UX of the final design facilitated a novel betting experience that was intuitive, engaging, and accessible to a broad audience of soccer fans. In its first year, Buabook was awarded a UK Banking license, a testament to the platform's integrity and the robustness of the underlying financial model. The platform facilitated over £2.4 million in trades, highlighting the market's appetite for this new form of engagement with sports. The dual-mode functionality catered to different user preferences, offering both the long-term strategy of the Season mode and the excitement of real-time betting in the Match mode.

The journey of designing Buabook's UI/UX was filled with valuable lessons. Foremost among these was the importance of flexibility and responsiveness to user feedback. The iterative design process, grounded in real user experiences and data, was crucial in developing a platform that met and exceeded user expectations. Additionally, the project underscored the importance of balancing complexity with usability, ensuring that even the most innovative features remained accessible to users.
